St Marys Wood
St Marys Wood (EARA) Limited
Reg. No 10232225
This ancient wood was put up for sale by Rother District Council and local Bexhillians came to its rescue. With an appeal launched by the Ellerslie Area Residents' Association (EARA) in the local media 51 people pledged money to save the wood, so protecting its future for all in Bexhill.

After many months of negotiation with Rother District Council, it was finally agreed that a new company would be formed
called St Marys Wood (EARA) Ltd, this is a company listed as limited by guarantee Reg no 10232225.

In June 2017 the contract was finally signed and the wood bought as a “Community Asset”.

This is now looked after by the company with the help of a professional tree surgeon and the very valuable volunteers who have helped with the tidying up.

The frontage onto Turkey Road has had the brambles and undergrowth cut back to enable us to plant some 300 hedging plants which will make a mixed hedge of Common Dogwood, Goat Willow, Guelder Rose, Blackthorn and Hawthorn.

News on St Mary's Wood - Foundation of Friends Group

Most Bexhillians at some time will have noticed a beautiful wood at the bottom of St Mary's Lane, close to Bexhill Cemetery.

This wonderful piece of our history was purchased almost a year ago from Rother District Council, not for profit, not for personal gain, but for the preservation for the whole community to enjoy.

The group of enthusiasts who made this possible want to share this exceptional wood with as many people as possible. To maintain and care for the wood comes at a price, which to date has been borne by just a few people who genuinely care about our environment and the legacy they want to pass on to future generations.

Their contributions have enabled a huge amount of work to be carried out, but sadly those funds will not last for ever. We are launching an appeal as part of the long term plans to secure funding for this special community asset. We are going to form a “Friends Group” open to families and individuals who share our aims, objectives and pride in where we live.

We want to see as many people as possible helping and enjoying this green oasis in the heart of our community. This asset belongs to us all, so if you would like to be part of the project, which will allow your children and grandchildren for generations to come, to enjoy this wood, then get in touch.

For a small annual fee you can become a friend, the feel good factor alone will be worth the donation requested.

We will be organising events for families Schools and Community groups. Look on our website for details on how to get more information.

Our aim is preservation with pleasure for all ages and interests, these community assets must not be lost or destroyed.

We look forward to hearing from you PLEASE CLICK on the link below for an application form to be part of the future of the wood
